Dissecting the Game Camera for First Time Buyer

I will try to explain with a less technical jargon and make it simple for you

Game Camera

1.Battery

There are multiple viable battery types to consider when it comes to powering your trail camera, as well as a few other potential sources of power which may be more or less convenient depending upon your purposes. Be sure to buy a camera which includes the type of battery that’s right for your purposes.

2.Infrared Emitters

Infrared cameras can only produce full-color images during the daytime. By night, they rely upon an infrared flash which results in black and white images, which are often blurry. The advantages to an infrared camera, aside from not spooking wildlife and having a much longer battery life than an incandescent camera, include a faster shutter speed; an infrared trail camera may take pictures much more frequently than a flash trail camera.

3. Detection Circuit

Your camera’s detection circuit governs all aspects of its ability to detect motion and activate appropriately in response, capturing imagery or video of whatever triggered it. These functions include the trigger speed, the recovery time, and the detection zone of your camera, all of which must be appropriately balanced relative to each other to determine the optimal rate at which the camera is most likely to capture quality images.

4.Viewing Screen

Some cameras incorporate a built-in viewer, allowing you to view their stored media without first having to download them onto a separate device with a screen. The viewer can be expensive, costing $50 or more as compared to a camera model which does not have such a feature. Opinions are mixed as to whether or not this is a valuable feature; some see it as a convenient option. Others believe that it is unnecessary, even “just one more feature to break” over long exposure to the elements.

Browning Trail Camera - Dark Ops

The Browning company has a legendary reputation with outdoors people all over the United States (and the rest of the world, for that matter) for a variety of different reasons, but the reason that they’ve been able to stay around as long as they have – and become as popular as they have – has everything to do with their ability to produce amazing solutions at affordable prices that are just as durable and as reliable as anything else on the market.

Browning continues to knock it out of the park in their firearms department (the Browning .22 lineup of rifles is one of the most exciting in the industry without abandoning history or tradition), but they also continue to innovate across a variety of other product sectors.

One of the best examples of this innovation and their ability to broaden their product horizons, so to speak, has to be the Dark Ops Browning Trail Camera.

Here’s what we think of this game changing outdoor camera setup.

First Impressions

First things first.

The 2015 version of the Dark Ops Browning Trail Camera is going to look A LOT like the 2014 version, but that isn’t exactly a bad thing. For starters, the 2014 version of this camera was rated the number one trail camera on the planet, so there’s definitely a bit of a pedigree here to work off of.

Secondly, the overall design of this particular camera is so picture-perfect, so well thought out, and so well implemented that it wouldn’t make any sense in the world to change things up just for the sake of change.

However, the internals of this outdoor camera have definitely been upgraded across the board, and that’s something that you’re going to notice almost immediately after using this camera for the first time. The pictures are crisp and perfectly clear, the video is in stunning high definition, and the audio is better than it’s ever been.

This is an exciting option.

Overall Design

As we just touched on, the overall design of this particular camera is absolutely unmatched out there on the market right now, completely blowing away the design and engineering of cameras that cost two or three times as much.

Everything about the Dark Ops Browning Trail Camera has been thought out with outdoorsman in mind as well as outdoors people in mind, and that’s on full display when you see just how rugged and durable this camera is.

Manufactured out of high density synthetics, rubberized materials, and waterproof solutions, you’ll be able to leave this camera in the woods for days and days on end without having to worry about it failing you thanks to the smart design.

With it's compact size, it will be an easier task when it comes to mount it on trees without any problems.

Ease Of Use

Trail cameras used to be notorious for their finicky control schemes and their ability to misinterpret whatever commands you weren’t giving it, but you’ll never run into those problems when you decide to move forward with this camera.

Instead, you’re going to find a clean and intuitive user control scheme pleasantly outlined on this device, and you’re also going to be able to effortlessly manipulate all of the controls and tactile feedback options while you are wearing gloves.

That was a big push from outdoors people last year, as a lot of individuals wanted to be able to use their outdoor cameras year-round

Now you can!

Picture Quality

The primary lens in the Dark Ops Browning Trail Camera provides 10 megapixels of resolution, but there are variable resolution options that you will have the opportunity to pick and choose from to find something more to your liking. If you’re looking to increase your storage space while reducing the size of the videos and the images that you take, simply ratchet the megapixel resolution rating down a little bit and you’ll be good to go

If you’re looking to capture images that you’ll be able to print or video that you’ll be able to publish online, you can jack the megapixel resolution through the roof and capture crystal-clear images and clips that are second to none

Special Features

The Dark IR setting on the Dark Ops Browning Trail Camera is easily its standout feature, and the kind of feature that helps to set it apart from the rest of the pack.

You’ll never have to worry about a visible flash startling the animals that have wandered up to your camera ever again, but you’re also never going to have to worry about pictures that come out too dark to really see or appreciate

Final Verdict

All things considered, there are a bunch of different outdoor camera options for you to pick and choose from – but none of them are the Dark Ops Browning Trail Camera. It already one a barrel full of awards last year, and it’s likely to win a barrel full more this time around, too!

Customer Reviews

Customers are loving this amazing trail cam as some don’t even use them for hunting purposes, but rather the monitoring of the wildlife in the area. One customer said that the photos and videos are beautifully clear, although the quality changes based on the time of day and conditions of the area the camera is in.

Another customer mentioned that the setup of the camera was so easy a toddler could probably do it without batting an eye. And another enjoyed the quality of both the video and the sound that he was able to get from a camera within the price range.

Although many customers love this camera, other customers weren’t as happy about it. One stated that the camera did not come with an SD card and that many of the cards that were tried didn’t work - You can check our Q&A here to get more info for this model before buying.

Another customer said that they were getting numerous false triggers and have had problems with it triggering properly. Some even had problems with the batteries coming loose causing the camera to shut down and have to be reset again. Another customer said that while everything works perfectly except that it triggers due to movement at 15 feet rather than movement further away.

He also had a problem with it only catching 2 things within a 24 hour period, the customer walking away from the camera after setting it up and walking towards it to retrieve the memory card. So far I never had any issues with this model, but if you're a first time buyer, then this model would be essentials swiss army for you.

Final Verdict

There are many reasons why this camera is an excellent camera for its price. First it provides you with photos and video with audio. Second it possesses weather proofing to provide versatility in placement of the camera to capture images of the wildlife.

And finally it allows you to research the conditions that the wildlife is traveling in such as moon phases and time of the day or night. This information can not only give you a better idea as to when you should go hunting, but also tell you when the deer are closest to the camera and how long they spend in the area. You will also appreciate the price that this camera is going for as it is a steal in comparison to other brands and products.

Moultrie M-990i No Glow Game Camera

If you’re interested in improving your hunting statistics, you’ll find that purchasing the right hunting accessories works wonders. One option to consider is the Moultrie M-990i No Glow Game Camera, which is designed to offer a host of exciting and practical technical features.

To help you familiarize yourself with this impressive model, which typically retails for about $250.00 at most larger online retailers, we’ve created a sensible and factual review.

This camera model clearly strikes a compromise between image quality, battery life, usability and price. Here are my observations:

  • Daytime images are reasonably good; color appears a bit washed-out in some shots.
  • Nighttime infrared images are quite crisp, with good detail and minimal blur (using the motion freeze setting).
  • In the multi-shot setting, first image in a series usually appears dimmer, as if the camera were calibrating the shutter speed on the basis of the first image - a slight design flaw, in my view.
  • Video has noticeably noisy background, and nighttime video appears to have lower actual frame rate, as other reviews have pointed out. Since the camera is meant to capture haphazard, non-staged images and video clips, this is perhaps adequate.
  • The flash is completely invisible; camera operation is silent.
  • Optical components are well-protected.
  • Screen in the front of the camera can be used for image review, or to aim the camera's view when mounting; screen display is not very visible in bright daylight.
  • Motion sensor has a good range: furthest moving object detected was at the distance of ca. 60 ft.
  • The manual contains good descriptions of the settings.
  • Company logo in the images is contained within the information strip at the bottom, and is very unobtrusive.
  • The inside of the camera has so far remained dry in rainy weather, but there are several potential leakage points. The front lid, which covers the controls and the screen, has openings for the camera lens and motion sensor: these openings have their own weather seals. Batteries reside in a drawer, which slides into the camera from the bottom and is not covered by the main lid; a separate weather seal protects the batteries.
  • Padlock hasp is quite bulky and 3/4 inch long. This is a good security feature, but it requires a large padlock, or one with a long loop.
  • Mounting strap is a textbook case of unthinking design: the strap has a steel clasp, spring-loaded and featuring prominent sharp teeth, attached to one end. To mount the camera on a tree, one has to thread the other end of the strap through the said clasp - it gave me a nasty cut the first time I attempted to mount the camera in the dark. There are also two perfectly good threaded sockets for the tripod mount.

What You Will Get

This camera features ten megapixels for incredibly clear image resolution. It’s also equipped with night vision via its “no glow” infrared camera. Tracking game at night will be a total breeze – just let this inconspicuous camera do all of the hard work for you.

This product features seventy feet of night range, as well as an Illumi-night Sensor, and it also records video in glorious high definition. This video comes with sound and it will help you to find out where game animals are congregating on your property or hunting ground.

In addition, this still camera/video camera comes with a lot of exciting add-ons, including displays for barometric pressure, moon phase, time date, temperature and camera ID. So, you’ll always have tons of vital data at your fingertips.

Pros and Cons of This Design

In terms of “pros”, this camera doesn’t glow at night, so it won’t alert people or animals while it’s being used. In addition, it offers superior night vision technology, so you’ll get clear shots when it’s dark, as well as in the daytime.

Since it has a very long range, you’ll be able to find out which game animals and people are spending time at your property (or hunting area) and you won’t need to spend a fortune in order to access still photographs and video footage. In addition, since this camera is manufactured by a trusted brand name, you’ll be investing in quality. It’s always smart to go with a respected brand name.

Some customers were thrilled to check their game cameras and discover ten or fifteen shots of deer which were taken during the night. They didn’t notice a lot of blank (no animal) photos. These customers loved knowing that deer were exploring their properties (or hunting grounds) and at what times. This type of information makes a successful hunt a lot easier to plan! It definitely boosts the odds of bagging a superlative animal which may even be a trophy buck.

As far as “cons” go, this camera is more expensive than some game cameras. If you want a rock-bottom price, you may be better off with another model which costs a lot less. However, in general, when it comes to these cameras, you will get what you pay for. So, paying a bit more for quality may be a wise investment.

Some customers have complained about glitches or problems with this camera, such as lots of unwanted pictures which are taken during the daytime. These customers aren’t sure why the camera triggers, since nothing of note is captured in these photographs. So, there may be an issue with overly-sensitive sensors or something of that nature. A lot of customers didn’t have this experience, but a few did have it and they were irritated by it, which is quite understandable.

Also, the “Plot Stalker” software program which works with this unit’s video footage may not be the best around. Luckily, it’s possible to use other forms of software in order to view and organize video footage from this camera. So, owners will have options.

After all, you will need a game camera that works well and is durable enough to stand the test of time. This model does have this kind of high performance and durability.

Balancing the pros and cons should help you to make a smart decision about whether or not this camera is right for you.

Why Buy a Game Camera, Anyway?

Most people buy these cameras in order to track game in specific areas. Since cameras of this type are portable, they are easy to move from place to place. They help hunters to find animals and get better results during hunting sessions. Without a game camera, the process of locating elusive game may be an uphill battle.

The Good
  • Small size - The game camera is a nice compact size. It tucks away nicely at the peak of my rooftop.
  • Photo Quality - The daytime and night time are both very nice. Clear crisp images
  • Video Quality - The daytime and night time video quality is very nice.
  • Long Battery Life - While battery life is reasonably good, I would still recommend Moultrie Camera Power Panel
  • Built-in Display - This is probably the coolest feature. Not because I want to view my photos on the camera, but because the display is also used to aim the camera. What better way to tell what you are going to take a picture/video of than actually see it in real time as you position the camera.
  • Camera Mount - I like that it has both a back and bottom standard camera mount for fastening the camera down to a tripod or wall mount.
  • No Glow - This is just neat.
The Bad
  • Narrow Viewing Angle

Pros and Cons of This Model

In addition, it is equipped with a trio of motion sensors which cover a vast detection area.

As well, you’ll find that this electronic camera offers a full sixty feet of night range. Choose from single-shot or panoramic shot images for total versatility. This camera also comes with a motion-freeze, blur-reducing feature.

It’s true that this camera may be too expensive for certain hunters. However, if you can afford it, you’ll find that it provides a lot of value.
